The Dunes Subject To Change - 2009-05-01
"Toronto rockers the Dunes are finally back with a follow-up to their 2006 crowd-pleasing debut, Socializing With Life. STC finds the band -- led by powerful vocalist Kevin Pullen -- pumping out one stadium-sized anthem after another, with a few delicate, introspective strummers adding sonic balance." - Jordan Bimm, NOW Magazine Purchase from:

Peter Katz & The Curious More Nights - 2008-10-07
"...Katz resembles kindred spirit Ron Sexsmith and his subtle acoustic charm, while channeling Hawksley Workman's grief stricken vocals. The music is reinforced by Katz's genuinely heartbreaking take on modern day love-tragedies. Every track features Katz laying his heart on the line and as an end result many listeners will find themselves in his songs... " - Jason Gladu, Pop Journalism

Tom Taylor Running Late - 2008-05-13
"Vancouver based Tom Taylor is a songwriter, and the care he places in this craft is evident right from I'll Be Your Only, the opening song on this disc. He wrote all of the material and on two of the eleven he has a co-writer. He handles the lead vocals with his slightly raspy voice, which adds a bit of the world weary, experienced traveler to the sound. Jeanne Tolmie handles the harmony vocals and duets and she adds a lot of expression and support to Mr. Taylor's vocals. The songs are strong and deal with all manner of relationships and take the listener on some interesting journeys." - Bob Gottlieb, Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange Purchase from:

Grand:PM Party in Your Basement - 2007-10-30
Party In Your Basement, an 11-song collection devoid of filler. The contagiously frisky "God Save The Scene" takes a perceptive look at the dangers of faddishness ("just when you get it right, you know you've got it wrong"), while the equally catchy opening cut, "Red/Black," sports the immortal line "I'm a loser but I ain't no quitter."
Band members may compare the sessions to a difficult childbirth, but the creative labours involved have paid off. Paul Hicken praises the 'big picture' approach of Zee, noting that "as the layers get put on, you realize the whole masterpiece Zee has had in his head for the whole time. You can't see it till its done, but it all fits together like a puzzle." Purchase from:

Holly McNarland Chin Up Buttercup - 2007-06-05
(Chin Up Buttercup)... feels like a broader reflection of McNarland's life than her previous efforts. One minute the singer is chronicling the breakdown of her marriage (the fuzz-riffed "Dear Pain" and the yearning "Bye Bye Boy"), the next she's capturing more gentle moments with Nege. (The tender rocker "Fly" was inspired by her son's musings about the wind.) Chin Up is far more balanced than anything she's done before, and while some fans who latched on to her scorned-woman lyrics will miss the bitterness, McNarland herself sounds much more pleased with the record than with anything else she's done. What's more, there are still plenty of hard-edged sounds and trademark vocal wails and growls on the record. She's not gone soft rock; she's just happy. - Elaine Corden, The Georgia Straight Purchase from:

Suzie McNeil Broken & Beautiful - 2007-04-10
"The album is stocked with hard pop chart smashers like "Hung Up" and "Skin," which would appeal to any radio listener. After that point, the album is heavy on rock ballads that McNeil shimmers on endlessly. "The One," "Lonely," "So in Love," and "Poison" are passionate, powerful, and sound amazing. There is never a doubt as to McNeil's vocal talents throughout the course of the album, mainly because she never sacrifices her vocal credibility in exchange for technology. However, the true highlight of Broken And Beautiful comes only two tracks into the album, with "Believe." "Believe" is an emotionally powerful ballad anthem which is not totally dissimilar (and older than) "Keep Holding On" by fellow Canadian Avril Lavigne. The song has garnered much fame in its own right in Canada and the United States. It was used as a theme song for The Biggest Loser, a weight-loss reality television program, and is the official anthem for the Canadian team of the Olympics, which is sponsored by Bell Canada, and the song is heavily publicized on their website. Overall, the album has some flaws. At only ten songs, and with seven of those tracks being ballads, there is less mainstream appeal than required for this album, but still, at the same time, the disc is too mainstream for rock fans. In other words, it borrows the negative traits of both "Breakaway" and "My December" without having the appeal of Pink's "I'm Not Dead." However, every single track individually is strong, and the best moments on the album are stronger than anything Kelly Clarkson ever recorded. With any luck, Broken And Beautiful will be a commercial success and McNeil will become the household name she deserves to be. - Matthew Chisling, All Music Guide Purchase from:

The Dunes Socializing w/ Life - 2006-09-26
"Thought provoking, up lifting, yet dark and emotionally jarring, "Socializing w/ life" is a dramatic collection of heart felt songs; that take you on a journey through love, loss, fear and desire. From the tender melodies and swooning lyrics of "Sunflower Eyes" and "The Easiest" to the uplifting "Hurry Up" to the edgy snarling guitars of "Calling all Cars", Socializing with Life tells emotional tales of love and hope. The album has been described as having a "global" sound at the same time delivering a raw and powerful intensity. The album builds towards the climax "Do It All the Time", which is an eruption of drums with a radio friendly chorus that has become an anthem to fans everywhere" - Joe Chisholm

Wide Mouth Mason Shot Down Satellites - 2005-08-30
This new Wide Mouth Mason album is absolutely fantastic. It starts off with four super-high-energy songs that are highlighted by some thick, revved-up slide guitar. This is the signature Wide Mouth Mason sound, but a lot more straight ahead and energetic than we're used to. Those first four tracks are awesome. Don't get me wrong, the rest is as well, but the energy and that ferocious slide guitar on the opening four is completely contagious. I haven't taken this CD out of my car in the week that I've had it. Purchase from:

Blue.Skies.At.War You Pour the Gasoline, I'll Light The Match - 2004-05-22
"Yet another band to bridge the hush-hush ties between emo and nu-metal, Blue Skies At War have produced an album whose sound is likely to appeal equally to fans of Thursday as well as fans of radio rock groups such as Three Days Grace. With their aim centred squarely on the angst-ridden teenage set, lyrics such as "I don't know if I'll be there when everyone you love turns away from you," can be as much a piercing arrow as a painful cliché, depending on your point of view. A few truly inspirational musical moments can be found throughout, such as the driving rhythm and fractured guitar of "Another Hero Dies," and the powerful screams of the band's triple vocal assault help anchor the "singing" portion of things. Guaranteed to win the band new fans on numerous sides of the musical fence, You Pour is an important release for a band who have been working long enough to deserve the break it will give them." - Sam Sutherland Purchase from:

Driveway Driveway - 2004-05-20
"It must be something in our water, because Canadian rockers can't help but embrace country music eventually. Driveway is the latest project from former MAdE members Jason Taylor and Chris Sytnyk, who emerge here as if in the past five years they have been listening to nothing but Ryan Adams, the Jayhawks and Lucinda Williams. The good news is that they have managed to write some great songs without appearing like alt-country dilettantes. The album starts off strong with slow-groovers "Tomorrow," "Unlucky Man," and "Angels," and keeps up a high standard throughout the remainder, despite veering off into Pete Yorn territory at times ("Revolving"). Subtle use of pedal steel and banjo adds a lot to the mix, and Taylor's voice is surprisingly suited to the material, considering his rock past. Sure, it will all sound familiar to even the average alt-country fan, but Driveway still make a strong case to be part of the club, and at the very least have crafted one of the best Canadian roots-rock releases of the year so far." Turn Off The Stars Everything is OK - 2004-02-10
"Turn Off The Stars is a new band based out of Canada with a lot to offer. With great musicianship and beautiful melodies, the band proves themselves as a credible act. While they have a style in the vein of Brit-Rockers such as Delirious, Coldplay, and Keane, Turn Off The Stars still seems to separate themselves from being completely pigeon-holed as a copycat.
Overall, this debut album from Turn Off The Stars is an excellent album. Fans of this genre should be very pleased with this it. They are far from being a Christian rip-off and do an amazing job to prove it. Each member plays an important and solid role in the band. With a top notch rhythm section, incredible guitars, and standout vocals, Turn Off The Stars is a solid debut that makes fans look forward to their future releases with great anticipation."
